Her mother is a gospel musician and her father a cab driver. Gabourey Sidibe has also a role in the movie Yelling to the Sky, a Sundance Lab project directed by Victoria Mahoney and starring Zoe Kravitz, in which she plays a bully.

Controversial "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe is on the cover of Elle Magazine's latest issue and everyone is talking about it! According to some people Gabi has been treated differently from other cover girls because of her size and color. Usually cover girls have the whole top half of their bodies in a picture, but Gabi only has her shoulders, chest and face and critics are saying that's because Elle didn't want to show off how big she is. Also her skin appears much lighter on the Elle cover picture than it usually does in pictures.
Elle has made a statement about Gabi's cover saying that they didn't photoshop or retouch Gabi's picture any more or less than they usually do and that they chose her for their cover girl because they love who she is.
